Jesup, 58 miles south of Savannah in southern Georgia, has long been an important junction on the predecessors of CSX. The CSX line through Jesup is the former Atlantic Coast Line’s famed Richmond to Jacksonville speedway, which today is better known as the “A” Line. At Jesup the “A” line splits into two lines, one heading to CSX’s largest hump classification yard in the South at Waycross, and the other to Jacksonville. In addition to CSX’s long trains between the Northeast and Florida, all of Amtrak’s New York to Florida trains pass through Jesup. In 2003 a railfan platform was opened at Jesup. This program shows over 24 hours of action in and around Jesup in March of 2008. “Jesup, Georgia – CSX Hot Spot” is 74 minutes in length. Norfolk Southern’s former Southern Railway main line between Atlanta and Birmingham is quite a mountain railroad. Known as the East End District, this busy line crosses a southern extension of the Blue Ridge near the Georgia-Alabama border where we videotaped. With UP using KCS’s Meridian Speedway as a shortcut for intermodal traffic between the West Coast and Atlanta and new assembly plants opening up in the South, intermodal and auto traffic has been growing rapidly on this line in recent years. “NS Atlanta to Birmingham Main” shows over 24 hours of traffic on Norfolk Southern’s East End District between Atlanta and Birmingham in the spring of 2008. “NS Atlanta to Birmingham Main” is 70 minutes in length. Here CSX’s and Norfolk Southern’s Atlanta to Chattanooga mains cross at grade. This video shows the traffic and operations at many locations on CSX's Fitzgerald Subdivision in southeastern Georgia. CSX's strategic Fitzgerald Subdivision runs from Manchester to Waycross, a distance of just over two hundred and one miles, and is CSX's gateway between Florida and the Midwest. The Fitzgerald sub between Manchester and Waycross is a funnel with most trains from the Midwest via Atlanta and Birmingham taking this line to Florida. The tonnage on this undulating line through the piney woods and peanut farms of southern Georgia has tripled in the past 30 years and this former Atlanta, Birmingham, & Coast and Atlantic Coast Line main is handling the most trains and tonnage of its one hundred year history. This video shows the trains and operations at many points on Norfolk Southern's strategic Atlanta South district between Atlanta and Macon in southern Georgia. This line serves as NS's gateway between south Georgia and Florida and the rest of their system. The Atlanta South District, part of their Georgia Division, stretches for 94 miles between Inman Yard in Atlanta and Brosnan Yard in Macon. Today this line is a heavy-duty main line with thick ballast, heavy rail, and two mile long controlled sidings about every eleven miles. The number of trains on this critical section of track has doubled in the past 30 years. This busy line through the rolling and often wooded countryside south of Atlanta is handling the most trains and tonnage of its one hundred and twenty year history.
