This program takes a look at the two BNSF main lines between the Twin Cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis and the adjacent cities of Moorhead, Minnesota and Fargo, North Dakota. Fargo is referred to as the Gateway to the Northern Plains and is the largest City in North Dakota.  The predecessors of these two lines are the first railroad in Minnesota, the St. Paul and Pacific, nee St. Paul, Minneapolis & Manitoba, later Great Northern Railway, and the Northern Pacific Railway, the first northern transcontinental railroad and third overall transcontinental.  First, we will show trains on BNSF’s former Northern Pacific Staples Subdivision around New York Mills and Perham, Minnesota.  Perham in sixty-five miles east of Dilworth, BNSF’s main terminal for the Fargo-Moorhead area, and one hundred seventy-five miles west of Northtown, BNSF’s primary classification yard in the Twin Cities.  Then we will cover the trains on the former Great Northern Twin Cities to Fargo main between the outskirts of Breckenridge, Minnesota and Benson.  Breckenridge is forty-eight miles railroad east of Fargo and two hundred and fifteen miles from St. Paul.  These two lines handle all of BNSF’s Northern Transcon traffic between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest and are part of BNSF’s northern coal corridor and are the eastern outlet for crude oil from the Bakken Shale oil field in North Dakota.   In spite of the downturn in coal and crude oil, these lines are still quite busy and the fall grain rush was also on when we visited BNSF in Minnesota.  BNSF has recovered from its Bakken crude oil induced meltdown on their Northern Transcon in 2013 and 2014 after billions were spent on added capacity and new power.  This DVD shows over 24 hours of traffic on both of BNSF’s main lines between the Twin Cities and Fargo in September of 2016.  Two DVD set.  Two hours and ten minutes in length.  This DVD can be watched with or without narration.

The historic, former Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy line from Chicago to Denver, now BNSF’s Chicago to Denver main line, was the heart and soul of the Burlington Route. Often referred to as “the way of the Zephyrs”, this line in eastern Iowa where this program was videotaped, once hosted the Burlington’s Denver and California Zephyr passenger trains, the famous Fast Mail, the Chicago to Denver hot shot freight trains, and the eastbound meat trains out of Omaha and Lincoln. In spite of the favoritism shown it by Burlington officials, the CB&Q’s Denver line across eastern Iowa was never a major freight route and hosted almost as many passenger trains as freight trains as late as the early 1960s. Today this line still hosts Amtrak’s California Zephyr but low sulfur coal out of the Powder River Basin bound for Midwestern power plants is what has allowed this line to flourish in recent years as it carries more freight tonnage today than ever. And with the congestion in North Dakota and eastern Montana caused by the influx of crude oil trains from the Bakken Shale oil field, some transcontinental trains have been re-routed off of the Hi Line that runs through northern Montana and North Dakota through here. This program shows over twenty-four hours of action on the central part of BNSF’s Ottumwa Subdivision west of Burlington in October of 2013. "BNSF west of Burlington, Iowa" is one hour and 41 minutes long. This DVD can be watched with or without narration.

BNSF main lines blanket over half of the U. S., but one of the areas that you would not expect to see BNSF trains is in northern Mississippi and Alabama on former St. Louis-San Francisco track. Thanks to predecessor Kansas City, Memphis and Birmingham completing a line between Memphis and Birmingham 125 years ago, BNSF’s easternmost gateway is Birmingham in northern Alabama where BNSF and CSX share an important connection. Today this line hosts a wide mix of train types from hot “Z” trains to nineteen thousand ton coal and taconite trains with radio controlled distributed power on both ends of the train. The new Toyota assembly plant just south of where we videotaped has added new business and this line is the primary interchange in the Southeast for intermodal business between CSX and BNSF. BNSF also gets finished autos from Norfolk Southern in Birmingham. This program shows over 30 hours of action on BNSF’s Birmingham to Memphis main in northern Mississippi in October of 2012. "BNSF's Birmingham to Memphis Main" is 62 minutes in length. This DVD can be watched with or without narration.

The former Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy’s line to Denver west of Lincoln, Nebraska, now part of BNSF’s Chicago to Denver line, was the heart and sole of the Burlington Route. Always a favorite of Burlington executives, this line hosted the Burlington’s famous Denver and California Zephyr passenger trains and the Chicago to Denver hot shot freight trains, and was among the first lines on the Burlington to get centralized traffic control over sixty years ago. In spite of the favoritism shown it by Burlington officials, the CB&Q’s Denver line west of Lincoln was never a major freight route and hosted as many passenger trains as freight trains as late as 1960. Today this line still hosts Amtrak’s California Zephyr and carries more freight business than ever. More freight trains traverse this line today than anytime since at least World War II. This program shows all the trains for 24 hours and then some on BNSF’s Denver line between Hastings and McCook in southwestern Nebraska in November of 2008.  65 minutes.  The DVD of this program has the option of being watched with and without narration.

The most scenic and accessible part of BNSF's Inside Gateway is the former Oregon Trunk Railway between Bend, OR and Wishram, WA.  Traffic on the Inside Gateway has nearly tripled since BNSF took over the Keddie to Bieber line from UP in 1997.  This video shows the dramatic recent changes in traffic and operations in July of 2002 on BNSF's Oregon Trunk Subdivision between Wishram and Bend, a line that for now still has the feel of the classic era of railroading with much jointed rail, searchlight style automatic block signals, and short sidings.  76 minutes.
