The small town of Mexico in northern Missouri, not quite half way between St. Louis and Kansas City, is a neat railroad center with two class I railroads running next to each other through the center of town. Between Mexico and Centralia, a distance of 14 miles, Norfolk Southern’s St. Louis District between St. Louis to Moberly, and Kansas City Southern’s line between St. Louis and Kansas City run side by side. Once main lines of the Wabash and Gulf, Mobile, and Ohio, respectively, and home to Union Pacific’s City Streamliners, these tracks have seen many changes and several owners over the decades. This program shows three days and one night of action on the NS and KCS lines around Mexico, Missouri, including the unique Schneider National trains on KCS, in June of 2011. “NS and KCS around Mexico, Missouri” is 61 minutes in length and sells for $30.95 plus $5.00 for S&H.  This DVD has the option of being watched with or without narration.

What railfan has not heard of Horseshoe Curve. Located six miles west of Altoona in central Pennsylvania, Horseshoe Curve is just one part of what Trains Magazine once called “the busiest mountain railroad in the world”, the 37 miles of three track main line over the mountain, the former Pennsylvania Railroad’s crossing of the Allegheny Mountains and the Eastern Continental Divide. Norfolk Southern’s line over this mountain today may not be the steepest grade in the country, or even the busiest any more, but this is big time railroading and even more tonnage squeals around Horseshoe Curve today than when it was Conrail’s or the Pennsylvania’s main line across Pennsylvania. Horseshoe Curve and its environs are still one of the seven wonders of the railroad world, and one of the pilgrimages all railfans must take at least once in their lifetime. This program shows all the trains for 24 hours west of Cresson on the more accessible west slope which is still quite a challenge for the long trains that NS likes to run over the mountain, and trains shot at Altoona, the top of the hill at Tunnel Hill and Gallitzin, and at the Curve itself in August of 2008. “NS around Horseshoe Curve” is a two DVD, two tape set and is 2 hours, 53 minutes in length. The DVD version of this program has menus and chapters and the ability to be watched with or without narration.

Norfolk Southern’s former Southern Railway main line between Atlanta and Birmingham is quite a mountain railroad. Known as the East End District, this busy line crosses a southern extension of the Blue Ridge near the Georgia-Alabama border where we videotaped. With UP using KCS’s Meridian Speedway as a shortcut for intermodal traffic between the West Coast and Atlanta and new assembly plants opening up in the South, intermodal and auto traffic has been growing rapidly on this line in recent years.   “NS Atlanta to Birmingham Main” shows over 24 hours of traffic on Norfolk Southern’s East End District between Atlanta and Birmingham in the spring of 2008. “NS Atlanta to Birmingham Main” is 70 minutes in length.  The DVD version of this program has the option of being watched with or without narration.

“NS Automotive Artery west of Decatur, Illinois” shows over 24 hours of action on each of the NS main lines to Kansas City and St. Louis west of Decatur in central Illinois in May of 2010. Norfolk Southern’s main Line from Detroit to Kansas City and St. Louis has a long and colorful history. Once part of the Wabash, the only railroad to breach both the Chicago and St. Louis gateways, this line today still handles more auto parts bound for assembly plants near St. Louis or Kansas City or the Southwest than any other rail line in this country. And now, with the split of Conrail between NS and CSX, NS’s automotive artery has taken on a new role as a key part of Norfolk Southern’s traffic lane from the East Coast to the St. Louis and Kansas City gateways. Decatur in central Illinois, where the former Wabash main lines from Detroit to Kansas City and Chicago to St. Louis cross, was the physical heart of the Wabash and remains an important rail center today. This DVD shows also shows how NS’s automotive artery is recovering from the current recession. “NS Automotive Artery west of Decatur, Illinois” is 69 minutes in length.  This DVD has the option of being watched with or without narration.

The 20 miles of double track between Bement and Decatur in central Illinois was the busiest section of track on the former Wabash.  At Bement the line from Chicago joined the line from Detroit.  Just west of Decatur the lines to St. Louis and Kansas City went their separate ways.  Today this funnel has twice the number of freight trains that it had during Wabash days and is a part of NS's busy automotive artery from Detroit to St. Louis and Kansas City.  This video shows over 24 hours of action on Norfolk Southern's Lafayette district between Bement and Decatur in May of 2003.  98 minutes.
