The 20 miles of double track between Bement and Decatur in central Illinois was the busiest section of track on the former Wabash.  At Bement the line from Chicago joined the line from Detroit.  Just west of Decatur the lines to St. Louis and Kansas City went their separate ways.  Today this funnel has twice the number of freight trains that it had during Wabash days and is a part of NS's busy automotive artery from Detroit to St. Louis and Kansas City.  This video shows over 24 hours of action on Norfolk Southern's Lafayette district between Bement and Decatur in May of 2003.  98 minutes.

In June of 1999 the face of railroading in the East changed overnight. It has now been over eleven years since CSX and Norfolk Southern split up Conrail and began operating their respective shares. How has Norfolk Southern’s former Conrail Chicago Line fared since the Conrail breakup and has traffic begun to recover from what some are calling the “great recession” that began over two years ago. “NS Chicago Line in Northern Indiana” answers those questions and more as it shows the trains and operations for over twenty-four hours on NS’s Chicago Line between the outskirts of La Porte and South Bend in northern Indiana in April of 2010. There have many changes in operations since our last look at this busy line across northern Indiana in 2001 as NS has really grown the business on their Chicago Line. And, in addition to Amtrak’s Lake Shore and Capitol Limited, Canadian Pacific’s trains between Chicago and Detroit also utilize this busy, former New York Central main line. “NS Chicago Line in Northern Indiana” is two hours and thirty-six minutes long and is a two DVD set.  This DVD has the option to be watched with or without narration.

This Program shows over twenty-four hours of action in August of 2017 on one of the more historic main lines in the southeastern United States – the former Southern Railway, now Norfolk Southern, Washington to Atlanta main line just south of the Virginia border.  Although today almost all of the traffic on this line runs via Hagerstown, Maryland, not through Washington, D. C., Norfolk Southern’s Piedmont Division Main today sees more tonnage than ever before in its storied history thanks to the acquisition of part of Conrail including ownership of the Hagerstown to Harrisburg Line.  This acquisition has greatly increased traffic on this line since our last look in 1998 just before the Conrail split.  As you will see, the Piedmont region of North Carolina is far from level, and there are few straight sections of track in this rolling country between the coastal plain and the Blue Ridge that was once home to many textile, furniture and tobacco related businesses, few of which remain.  This line carries all of NS’s traffic between the Northeast and the Southeast with all carload trains terminating or originating at Linwood Yard, 41 miles south of Greensboro.  NS former Southern Railway North Carolina main is 68 minutes in length and can be watched with or without narration.

Between Abilene and Burkeville, just west of the crew change point of Crewe in south-central Virginia, all Norfolk Southern trains bound for Norfolk run on the same single-track line.   Crewe is midway between Roanoke and Norfolk and this section of track is part of the original Norfolk and Western main line. West of Abilene, loaded coal trains take the former Virginian line between Roanoke and Abilene while other trains take the former N&W main to Roanoke.   This line between Crewe and Abilene hosts some of the heaviest trains on this continent – export coal trains bound for Norfolk Southern’s Pier 6 at Lamberts Point in Norfolk. Besides coal, this line sees an increasing amount of intermodal traffic headed to Norfolk. This program shows over 24 hours of action between Crewe and Abilene in August of 2008. “NS Roanoke to Norfolk Main” is 68 minutes in length.  The DVD of this program has the option of being watched with or without narration.
