NS Trains on the Rathole in 2011

One of the most storied and best known sections of railroad in this country is the second district of the CNO&TP subsidiary of Norfolk Southern between Danville, Kentucky and Oakdale, Tennessee, better known as the Rathole, for the tight, smoke filled tunnels that once existed on this line. This program shows over twenty-four hours of awesome action on Norfolk Southern’s Rathole on the Cumberland Plateau, just north of the Tennessee-Kentucky border in November of 2011. Business is again growing on this busy up and down line that still challenges the modern power of today, and the variety of that power and traffic is amazing with many intermodal, mixed carload, auto, and unit trains clogging the alternating single and two track main line of the Rathole.  2 disk set.  1 hour and 45 minutes in length.  This DVD has the option of being watched with or without narrtion.

CSX on Sand Mountain in Northern Alabama

CSX’s climb up Sand Mountain as it crosses the Appalachian Mountains in northern Alabama on CSX’s S&NA North subdivision is one of only a handful of manned pusher districts left in the Eastern U. S. This program shows over twenty-four hours of action in November of 2011 on CSX’s S&NA North subdivision on and around Sand Mountain, which begins at Cullman, Alabama, fifty-two miles north of Birmingham. CSX’s S&NA North sub between Nashville and Birmingham was the busiest part of the Cincinnati to New Orleans main line of the Louisville and Nashville, and today is part of CSX’s busiest north-south traffic lane between the Midwest and Southeast. The one point one percent climb for southbounds up Sand Mountain was double tracked a decade ago and a manned pusher station was then added to assist heavy southbounds up the hill. As part of what CSX calls their Southeast Corridor, the freight train count on this line has more than tripled in the past fifty years as CSX’s other Midwest to Southeast traffic lanes are now at capacity.  This DVD can be watched with or without narration.

CSX "S" and "A" Lines in North-Central Florida

This program shows over twenty-four hours of action on both of CSX’s main lines from Jacksonville to Tampa and Miami in north-central Florida in October of 2011. These lines are better known as the “S” and “A” Lines, referring to their Seaboard Airline and Atlantic Coast Line ancestry respectively. Both lines are in for big changes in the next two years as the State just purchased sixty-one miles of the “A” Line around Orlando for use as a commuter line. Several CSX trains will be transferred to the “S” Line and additional capacity will be added. Both lines are mostly single-track, high-speed, high capacity lines with long sidings about ten miles apart and centralized traffic control. Six Amtrak trains also run on this part of the “A” Line.   With housing starts and construction way down, this program shows how CSX is coping with the great recession, and as you will see, traffic on these lines has held up fairly well.  CSX "S" and "A" Lines in North-Central Florida is 76 minutes in length.  This DVD has the option of being watched with or without narration.

The FEC North End in 2011

Over the past five decades the Florida East Coast Railway has had a most fascinating ride as it went from a railroad that had never paid a dividend, to one of the most profitable, and for many years the fastest growing rail line in North America. FEC’s trains today have an incredible mix of truckers’ containers and trailers on them. To its historian, the FEC of the last 50 years has been America’s greatest railroad – a maverick who went its own way and developed many of the operating practices now common on all railroads today. However labor groups fifty years ago held a contrarian view. The great recession still grips most of Florida with housing starts and construction way down from the level of five or so years ago. This video shows how this dynamic and once controversial little railroad is faring in the fall of 2011 on the north end of its system. As you will see, the Florida East Coast, currently owned by the Fortress Investment Group who also owns short line conglomerate Rail America, has fought back with fewer but longer trains and maintained its profitability.  The FEC North End in 2011 is 49 minutes in length.  This DVD has the option of being watched with or without narration.

All kinds of news this month as the Covid-19 Pandemic still rages and plunges the country into a depression.  Fortunately we work out of our home and haven’t really been affected - yet.  First, we hope that all of you are safe and well and haven’t lost sources of income due to the pandemic.  All of our six “kids” and 16 grandkids are doing okay.  We are minimizing our visits to stores and the Post Office and always wear masks when we are out.  I am producing videos for the joy of traveling and writing, not the money.  We have one new program this month - “PSR on NS’s Premier Corridor in Northern Indiana”. Besides the new NS program, we have only one more program in the can, so to speak – CSX’s Garratt Sub in northern Indiana that was shot last October.  I doubt that I will be out videotaping this fall.  I would like to wait until rail traffic settles down to whatever the “new normal” is before I go out chasing trains.  And that will not likely occur until there is a vaccine.  And who knows at what level the pandemic will be this fall.  I am planning to release the new CSX program in late October or early November.  There likely will be no other new programs released or any other newsletter until next June, assuming that I do go out videotaping in April of 2021.

No other train video producer shows and explains railroading like we do and our catalogue includes programs on fallen flags ATSF, SP, BN, CNW,  IC, Wisconsin Central, and Conrail.  Our latest program shows the effects of precision scheduled railroading on the NS Chicago line across northern Indiana.  And the effect of PSR is considerable – many fewer but longer trains with much use of distributed power.  New this month is “PSR on NS’s Premier Corridor in Northern Indiana”. This is our 48th program to be released in both Blu-ray and in regular DVD.  You need to specify what type of DVD you are ordering with programs available in both DVD and Blu-ray.  All of our DVD’s have chapters and menus and around half – everything videotaped from 2004 on plus a few programs from 2003 - have a choice of being watched with narration and without narration by using the menu or audio and language buttons on your DVD player controller.  320 programs are available in DVD (48 in Blu-ray) and all are listed in the flyers.  No other train video producer shows and explains railroading like we do and our catalogue includes programs on fallen flags ATSF, BN, SP, CNW. IC, Wisconsin Central, and Conrail.  Our shipping and handling charge on orders remains $5.00 with no charge on orders over $100.  We offer year-round discounts on large orders.  See flyers for details.  These discounts are available only by mail and phone.  If you have questions and get our answering machine, please leave your name and number and we will call you back as soon as possible.  You can reach us by email at bigeee@trainvideos.com or on our webpage at www.trainvideos.com.

Our programs show the whole train

  • Most programs show all trains for 24 hours or more
  • Train symbols, origins, history, and operations covered in narration
  • No train video producer does a better job of explaining railroading than we do
  • Our programs are truly documentaries of railroading
  • Years 1992 to present

Our mission is to document the incredible changes going on in today's railroading. Our programs are aimed at customers interested in operations and fans and modelers that want to know what is truly going on in railroading and to see the whole train. We are the only train video producer who makes every effort to identify and show complete trains. Expert commentary tells about the changes in operations over the years, schedules, and what a particular train is carrying and where it is going. Most of our DVDs and videos show 24 hours of action on a particular line or at a given point. These programs give a 24 hour "look" at today's railroading that is unprecedented in the train video industry and will become more valuable as time goes on.  Our programs are documentaries that cover contemporary railroading from 1992 to the present and were shot in locations all over the United States and Canada. These DVDs and videos are not simply a collection of runbys of locomotives and a few head end cars taken at different places. We are recording history!  That is why original slogan was "No More Mindless Runbys."
