BNSF's Oregon Trunk Sub

The most scenic and accessible part of BNSF's Inside Gateway is the former Oregon Trunk Railway between Bend, OR and Wishram, WA.  Traffic on the Inside Gateway has nearly tripled since BNSF took over the Keddie to Bieber line from UP in 1997.  This video shows the dramatic recent changes in traffic and operations in July of 2002 on BNSF's Oregon Trunk Subdivision between Wishram and Bend, a line that for now still has the feel of the classic era of railroading with much jointed rail, searchlight style automatic block signals, and short sidings.  76 minutes.

UP's Incredible Cascade Line

One of the most remarkable mountain grades in the West is Union Pacific's line through Willamette and Pengra passes in the Cascades southeast of Eugene, Oregon.  For 42 miles the grade on this former SP line ranges from 1.5 to 1.7%.   This is the longest sustained helper grade on the UP system today, although the helpers now are radio controlled distributed power units.   The scenery on this line is easily the equal to that on Tehachapi or Cajon. This video shows the trains and operations on UP's remarkable line through the Cascades in July of 2002.  88 minutes.

Paired Track in the Canyons

With its combination of incredible scenery and many trains, the Fraser and Thompson River Canyons in British Columbia are certainly one of the seven wonders of the railfan world.  Canadian National and Canadian Pacific run nearly 60 trains between them in 24 hours through the canyon and this scenery is easily accessible.  In December of 1999 CN and CP began sharing each other's tracks through the canyon.  This video covers this unique paired track operation by showing over 24 hours of action on each line through the spectacular Fraser and Thompson River Canyons in July of 2002.  3 Hours, 51 minutes.  Three disk DVD-R, two tape set.

The FEC in 2002

Over the past four decades the Florida East Coast Railway has had a most fascinating ride as it went from a railroad that had never paid a dividend, to one of the most profitable.  This video shows how this dynamic and sometimes controversial little railroad is faring in the fall of 2002.  This video shows 2 1/2 days of action on the FEC's main line between Melbourne and Fort Pierce in October of 2002.  65 minutes.

24 Hours at Rochelle

Rochelle, Illinois, 75 miles west of Chicago, is known as the town that built the park for railfans.  At Rochelle, UP's extremely busy former CNW main line from Chicago to the West Coast crosses the former Burlington Northern, now BNSF, main to  the Pacific Northwest.     Ninety or more trains hammer the diamonds next to the Rochelle Railroad Park on a good day.  This video shows over 24 hours of action at one of the Midwest's best known railfan hot spots in September 2002.  4 Hours, 40 minutes.  Three part DVD, 2 tape VHS set.

The Route of the Zephyrs in 2002

The main line of the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad between Aurora and Galesburg in central Illinois is one of the more storied rail lines leading west from Chicago, long known for its fleet of Zephyr passenger trains.  Since the BN merger, the tonnage on this line has grown by fifty per cent, but the traffic mix has changed dramatically.  And Amtrak still uses the Zephyr name on two pair of trains that run on this line.  This video will show the traffic and operations for two days and one night at many locations on what BNSF now calls their Mendota Subdivision in September of 2002.  77 minutes.

Norfolk Southern's Atlanta to Macon Main

This video shows the trains and operations at many points on Norfolk Southern's strategic Atlanta South district between Atlanta and Macon in southern Georgia.  This line serves as NS's gateway between south Georgia and Florida and the rest of their system.  The Atlanta South District, part of their Georgia Division, stretches for 94 miles between Inman Yard in Atlanta and Brosnan Yard in Macon.  Today this line is a heavy-duty main line with thick ballast, heavy rail, and two mile long controlled sidings about every eleven miles.  The number of trains on this critical section of track has doubled in the past 30 years.  This busy line through the rolling and often wooded countryside south of Atlanta is handling the most trains and tonnage of its one hundred and twenty year history.  This video shows the trains and operations for over 24 hours on Norfolk Southern's Atlanta South District in October of 2002.  113 minutes.

CSX's Busy Manchester to Waycross Main

This video shows the traffic and operations at many locations on CSX's Fitzgerald Subdivision in southeastern Georgia.  CSX's strategic Fitzgerald Subdivision runs from Manchester to Waycross, a distance of just over two hundred and one miles, and is CSX's gateway between Florida and the Midwest.  The Fitzgerald sub between Manchester and Waycross is a funnel with most trains from the Midwest via Atlanta and Birmingham taking this line to Florida.  The tonnage on this undulating line through the piney woods and peanut farms of southern Georgia has tripled in the past 30 years and this former Atlanta, Birmingham, & Coast and Atlantic Coast Line main is handling the most trains and tonnage of its one hundred year history.  This video shows over 24 hours of continuous action around Fitzgerald on CSX's busy line between Manchester to Waycross in October of 2002.  85 minutes.

CSX's Alleghany Sub - Heart of the Former C&O

This video shows three full days and a night of awesome action on CSX's Alleghany subdivision between Clifton Forge, Virginia and Hinton, West Virginia in April of 2003.  The scenic Alleghany Subdivision crosses the Eastern Continental Divide in the Allegheny Mountains on the Virginia - West Virginia border.  This spectacularly engineered line with many double track tunnels and huge fills was the heart of the former Chesapeake and Ohio and it carried a huge volume of coal, merchandise traffic, and passengers to Washington, D.C., Richmond, and the port of Newport News.  Today, this 130 year old line with its 0.57% ruling grade against loaded coal and grain trains still carries many high tonnage trains across the Eastern Continental Divide to Newport News and other points in the Southeast.  93 minutes.
