Powder River Basin - South Entrance
Over 80 BNSF and UP coal trains a day exit the south entrance to the Orin line that bisects the Powder River Basin in eastern Wyoming , making the south end of the Orin Line the second busiest freight line in this country. Almost all trains are pulled by the latest AC locommotives, many using distributed power. This videotape shows 24 hours of action in October 1999 on the busiest part of the Orin Line - the south end. UP Southern Idaho Main
The Union Pacific's main line to the Pacific Northwest around Glenns Ferry in southern Idaho is a scenic and tough piece of railroad with 1.45% grades in both directions out of the Snake River valley. Manned pushers are used on westbound grain, soda ash, coal, and beet trains, and on heavy manifest trains on these grades. The number of freights on CP's Prairie Main, part of their trans-continental line across Canada, is at an all time high, fueled by increases in double stacked containers and traffic to and from Chicago.
